New energy options generate a winning grade
Université Sainte-Anne’s main campus at Point-de-l’Église, Nova Scotia relied on oil as its primary heating source, until the university’s administration decided it was time for a change. Taking advantage of the ecoNova Scotia program, the school replaced its oil heat with sources from local biomass (woodchips) and solar thermal panels. In addition, one wind turbine is now operational, and a second is being installed in 2011.
With direct annual heating cost savings of $200,000 the University gets an grade of A+ for using innovative technology to reduce its energy consumption and help protect the environment.
