The global economy in 2016 is poised for another year of modest growth, with the forecast from earlier in the year being revised down, in light of recent developments and slow solutions to ongoing issues. CURRENT ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT AND OUTLOOK - UNITED STATES
In 2014 and 2015, the US economy grew 2.4 per cent per year. Consumer spending is growing at a faster rate each year since 2012. Residential investment increased as US housing starts rose to over 1.1 million and home prices increased. Business investment was generally positive outside the oil and gas sector. CURRENT ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT AND OUTLOOK - CANADA
Canada’s recovery and expansion from the 2009 recession depended heavily on investment in and exports from natural resources. This ended with the recent collapse in commodity prices, especially oil. Prior to the collapse, Canada’s recovery was disproportionately concentrated in provinces richly endowed with natural resources: Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador.
