Lake Annis Nature Reserve protects impressive old hardwood forest on private land, along with over 5 km of frontage on Lake Annis, Lake Jesse and the Annis River, in Yarmouth County.
The reserve was designated at the request of the landowners.
Most of the forest consists of older sugar maple, yellow birch, and beech. Large red spruce trees, and old forest elements, such as cavity trees and coarse woody debris, are scattered throughout.
This nature reserve is within the Tusket River Drumlins natural landscape, a biologically rich part of Nova Scotia which has few protected areas.
A public road and a multi-use trail on an abandoned rail corridor pass through this private land. Use of these routes is not affected by the nature reserve designation.
