New Building Canada Fund - Small Communities Fund

Nova Scotia has entered into a funding Agreement for delivery of the New Building Canada Fund – Small Communities Fund (SCF). The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) administers the SCF, including the application process, on behalf of Canada and Nova Scotia. This 10-year cost-shared program (2014-2024) will provide $42.6M in federal funding for capital infrastructure projects to be matched by provincial and municipal funds.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants under SCF include Nova Scotia municipalities and villages with a population under 100,000.

Eligible Project Categories

The eligible project categories are:

  • wastewater;
  • drinking water;
  • solid waste management;
  • disaster mitigation;
  • connectivity and broadband;
  • innovation;
  • green energy;
  • public transit;
  • brownfield redevelopment;
  • local and regional airports;
  • short line railways;
  • short-sea shipping; and
  • highways and major roads.

Key Dates

The first round of applications for this program closed on December 19, 2014.

For approved projects DMA will enter into contribution agreements with project proponents. The timing of future Application Rounds is under consideration and will be announced at a later date.
