Pay for a Knowledge Test

Enter the personal information

Enter the personal information, including the master number, of the person taking the test. The master number can be found on your Nova Scotia Driver's Licence or Nova Scotia Identification Card.

If you have never had a Nova Scotia Driver's Licence or a Nova Scotia Identification Card, leave the master number blank and choose the type of knowledge test you are paying for. See below for types of knowledge tests.

Transaction confirmation

Important:

You must print the transaction confirmation as proof of payment.

You will need your transaction confirmation as proof that you paid for your test. If you do not have your receipt you will have to pay again.

Types of knowledge tests

Class 1 - Semi/Tractor Trailer Licence

Semi-trailer and tractor-trailer combinations, and all types of vehicles in classes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 (except school buses). A medical is not required to take a knowledge test.

Class 2 - Bus Licence

Vehicles having a seating capacity of more than 24 passengers, and all types of vehicles in classes 3, 4, 5 and 8 (except school buses).

Class 3 - Heavy Commercial Licence

Any single vehicle over 14,000 kg (30,864 lbs G.V.W.), any combination of vehicles (other than semi-trailer or tractor-trailer combination over 14,000 kg G.V.W.) where the towed vehicle in the combination does not exceed a G.V.W. of 4,500 kg or 10,000 lbs, and all types of vehicles in classes 4, 5 and 8 (except school buses).

Class 4 - Public Passenger Licence

Buses under 24 passengers (except school buses), taxis, ambulances, commercial vans as defined under the Motor Carrier Act and regulations, and all types of vehicles in classes 5 and 8.

Class 7 - Learner Licence

If you are under 18, your parent or guardian will need to provide written permission for you to take the test. Any single vehicles not exceeding 14,000 kg (30,864 lbs G.V.W.) with parental approval, any combination of vehicles (other than semi-trailer or tractor-trailer combinations) not exceeding in combination a G.V.W. of 14,000 kg 30,864 lbs G.V.W., and the towed vehicles in that combination not exceeding a G.V.W. of 4,500 kg or 10,000 lbs, and all types of vehicles in class 8.

Class 8 - Farm Tractor Licence

Farm tractors (from age 16 and also valid as a class 7 learner's licence).

School buses

Motorcycle Endorsement and Class 6

Motorcycles and/or motor-driven cycles. Knowledge Test includes a written test and a riding skills test called a "balance test".

Writing your knowledge test

You do not need to make an appointment to write the knowledge test, but you must come to the office during specific hours. Please view the list of driver examination and testing service locations and hours. If you would like to take the test spoken out loud instead of in writing, you must call the number printed on the receipt to make an appointment.
