Hearing Aid Dealer (Company) Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
Any company in Nova Scotia engaged in testing, fitting and sales of hearing aids and accessories, irrespective of the method of sale (either direct sale or sale through a retail store).

Application Forms & Process:
 

With this Permit, there are two different ways to submit your application form: 

A) You can send in a hard copy. You can get a form by: 
       (1) downloading a form from our website; 
       (2) visiting any Access Nova Scotia Centre; or 
       (3) calling or writing the office listed above. 

Regardless of the process used to apply for this licence, permit, registration or certificate, you must send in the signed original application containing your signature in ink. If a signed copy is not submitted, you will be requested to do so which may lead to a delay in the issuance process.

B) You can fill it out online. To do this, you must be able to pay by Visa, MasterCard or American Express Credit Card. We cannot accept any form of Debit cards at this time.

Regardless of the process used to apply for this licence, permit, registration or certificate, you must send in the signed original application containing your signature in ink. If a signed copy is not submitted, you will be requested to do so which may lead to a delay in the issuance process.

Information you will need to fill out your application form:

  • Details are required if the applicant or any partner, officer or director has
  • had a business licence
  • had a licence refused, suspended or revoked
  • been involved in a personal or corporate bankruptcy
  • unpaid judgments outstanding
  • been convicted of a offence under the law and not been pardoned
  • Name, address and date of birth for the applicant, partners and officers
  • Three year employment history for the applicant, partners and officers

A company applying for this permit must also submit:

  1. Original copy of surety bond. Bond amounts are determined using the formula in Section 13(2) of the Regulations. (See licensing guide for further information).
  2. sample of the contract, containing the Buyers Right To Cancel (See licensing guide for required language) as required on a direct sales contract, for approval;
  3. copy of calibration certificate(s), testifying to the accuracy of the testing equipment to be used;
  4. confirmation that it has a place of business in Nova Scotia.

If all requirements are met and the application is approved, the permit will be mailed to the applicant.

Waiting Period:
 

10 business days
Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received
(Please allow several extra days for mail delivery.)

Expiry & Renewal:
 

This licence is valid for up to 1 year covering the period from February 1 of one year to January 31 of the next. It can be renewed, and the Department will send out a renewal notice 45 days before it expires.

Price: (No tax is charged)
 

Initial Application and Annual Renewal:

Hearing Aid or Hearing Aid Services with fewer than 11 salespeople: $150 per year
Hearing Aid or Hearing Aid Services with 11+ salespeople: $500 per year

NOTE: Individual Salespeople also require an Individual Salesperson Permit.

If you send in an application form payment is by cheque or money order made out to the Minister of Finance. No debit cards are accepted at this time. 

If you apply online, payment is (a) by Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card. No debit cards are accepted at this time.

Related Requirements:
  The business must be registered with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies.
Additional Information:
  Who is regulated under the Direct Sellers' Licensing and Regulation  Act?
Companies and individuals engaged in testing, fitting, and sales of hearing aids, irrespective of the method of sale or the dollar amount.

What is regulated?
1) all sales of hearing aids irrespective of the circumstances of the sale (does not have to be a direct sale);
2) the minimum educational / training standards of individuals selling hearing aids;
3) the contents of contracts.
