Who Needs This Registration?
Any Nova Scotia employer who sponsors a private pension plan.

Application Forms & Process:
Forms for Application for Registration of Pension Plan may be obtained from the above office or from Finance and Treasury Board website.  The completed form is submitted, along with the appropriate fee, to the Division.

If approved, a Certificate of Registration is issued by the Superintendent of Pensions by letter.
Waiting Period:

10 business days for:
Approval of Financial Hardship Unlocking
Life Income Fund Specimen Plan or Amendment Approval
Pension Plan Registration (private or municipal)
30 business days for: Pension Plan Terminations - Full or Partial

Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received.

Expiry :
This Registration does not expire.
Price: (No tax is charged)

The fee is $5.80 per member with a minimum fee of $116.65 and a maximum fee of $8,749.75.

Related Requirements:
Any amendments to the pension plan require a Notice of Registration of Amendment (required by Section 22 of the Pension Benefits Act).
Additional Information:
  1. If the majority of the members of the plan reside in another province, the plan is registered in that province.


  2. Each year an Annual Information Return form is sent to each employer at their plan's year end.  The employer has 6 months to send the completed form, with appropriate fee, to the Pension Regulation Division.


  3. An actuarial Report must be filed every three years for defined benefit pension plans.
