Barneys River Nature Reserve protects old growth hardwood in the Barneys River watershed near Highway 104 in eastern Pictou County. The site, split between three disjunct parcels, is easily accessible from public roads for old growth forest viewing, education, and study.
The largest and southernmost parcel contains several trails for walking and cross-country skiing in an impressive old-growth setting. These trails are currently not managed or signed.
The nature reserve’s intact and older forests provide important habitat for endangered mainland moose, and help maintain water quality in Barneys River, an important refuge for brook trout and Atlantic salmon.
