Overview

A collection of five separate properties along the historic Shubenacadie Canal system. These properties provide a range of opportunities for outdoor recreation and heritage protection and education.

Protection Values

Five separate park properties (Shubenacadie Canal, Portobello, Wellington, Horne Settlement, and Caddall Rapids); the Shubenacadie Canal Commission also administers several additional properties as part of this system.  The Shubenacadie Canal is a National Historic Civil Engineering Site and a candidate Canadian Heritage River; Lock #5 is a Provincial Heritage Site; lands associated with this park system form the vast majority of public lands on the Shubenacadie River.

Education Values

Provides opportunities to interpret a provincially significant cultural feature; Fairbanks Centre includes interpretive displays; interpretation of the Shubenacadie River system

Significant tourism attraction, particularly if further restored

Outdoor Recreation Values

The properties offer walking and biking trails; canoeing/kayaking; scenic views; Oakfield and Laurie provincial parks may offer opportunities for complimentary outdoor recreation, access, accommodation and interpretation
