Cranberry Growing Operation at Lowes Meadows

Project Status

The Minister has requested more information. Comments may be submitted on the entire project once the additional information required by the Minister has been provided.

Description

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to develop and operate 27.3 ha of cranberry beds on a 202 ha piece of Crown land, 122 ha of which is bog. Construction will be primarily an earth moving activity, and will include removal of the vegetative mat, dyke construction, and excavation of a tailwater pond and flood/drainage ditches. Cranberry vines will then be planted in the constructed cranberry beds. Under the Environmental Assessment Regulations, an undertaking which disrupts a total of 2ha or more of any wetland is a Class I Undertaking.

Minister's Decision

On August 24, 2001 the Minister of Environment and Labour released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:7k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided that the registration information is insufficient to allow him to make a decision and that additional information is required in accordance with Section 13 (1)(a) of the Environmental Assessment Regulations.

The proponent must submit additional information concerning inventories of botanical and zoological species-at-risk for the proposed project site. The information must be sufficient to predict impacts for botanical and zoological species-at-risk and to identify options and strategies to maximize impact avoidance, and where such impacts cannot be avoided, to identify appropriate mitigation and/or compensation.

Once the information has been submitted, the Minister will have 25 days to make a decision on the undertaking. The proponent cannot commence work on the undertaking or any part thereof until the undertaking has been approved under Part IV of the Environment Act.
