Surface Gypsum Mine at Miller's Creek, Hants County

Description

This is to advise that on October 16, 2009, CGC Inc., Fundy Gypsum submitted the Focus ReportPDF Download Link (PDF:8.9mb) for the proposed Miller's Creek Mine Extension Project, Hants County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to mine gypsum from a surface mine in Miller's Creek, Hants County. The mine life, including construction, operation and reclamation is anticipated to be in the order of 50 years.

Project Update

On Feb 3, 2012, the Minister authorized an extension for the commencement of work effective February 4, 2012, and expiring February 4, 2014. The Proponent must, on or before February 4, 2014, commence work on the Undertaking unless granted a written extension by the Minister.

Minister's Decision

On February 4, 2010 the Minister of Environment released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:418k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 18(a) of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditionsPDF Download Link (PDF:73k).

The proponent is required to obtain all other necessary approvals, permits or authorizations before commencing work on the undertaking.

Opportunities for Public Input

Public comments on the Focus Report were accepted until November 23, 2009.

Comments received, including any personal information, will be made available to the public from the Department of Environment and Climate Change library, 5th floor, Halifax Office (5151 Terminal Rd.).
