Tote Road Quarry Expansion Project

Description

On 16 November 2022, Scotian Materials Limited (Scotian) registered an additional information addendum to the Tote Road Quarry Expansion Project for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The additional information addresses the request by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on more information relating to the potential impacts to water resources. The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to expand the existing approved 4 hectare (ha) quarry to 24 ha in size so that Scotian may continue to extract and supply aggregate to meet local and regional demand. The Project is located on Tote Road, Head of St Margarets Bay, Halifax County, Halifax Regional Municipality. Quarry expansion is anticipated to commence in 2022, at a planned production rate of up to 200,000 tonnes per year, unchanged from current production, for 30+ years depending on demand.

Minister's Decision

On 16 January 2023, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change released a decision (PDF) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditions (PDF).

Public comments on the Additional Information Registration were accepted until 16 December 2022.
