Lower Carbon Fuel: Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) System

Description

This is to advise that on March 23, 2017 Lafarge Canada Inc. registered the proposed Lower Carbon Fuel: Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) System for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to construct and operate a system to use scrap tires, in place of coal or petroleum coke, as a low carbon fuel in Kiln #2 at their Brookfield Cement Plant located in the community of Pleasant Valley, approximately 13 km southeast of Truro, Nova Scotia in the Municipality of the County of Colchester. Pending approval to proceed, construction is anticipated to commence mid 2017 with operations to begin in late 2017.

Minister's Decision

On July 6, 2017 the Minister of Environment released a decision concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditions.
