Goffs Quarry Expansion Project

Description

This is to advise that on September 5, 2019, Scotian Materials Limited registered an Additional Information AddendumPDF Download Link (PDF:9.3mb) for the Goffs Quarry Expansion Project for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

On August 7, 2018 Scotian Materials Limited registered the Goffs Quarry Expansion Project for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act

On September 25, 2018, the Minister of Environment determined that the Registration information was insufficient to make a decision on the Project and that additional information was required. The Proponent was required to provide information regarding surface and groundwater, site design and reclamation, fish, wetlands, and potential impacts to The Waverly-Salmon River Long Lake Wilderness Area in an Addendum. The Proponent was also required to complete a Mi’kmaq Ecological Knowledge Study.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to expand the existing Goffs quarry located on private land owned by Scotian Materials (PID: 00505941). The expansion would extend the life of the existing quarry by an estimated 25 to 50 years. The anticipated average production rate is 150,000 to 300,000 tonnes per year. Project activities (including construction and operation) are anticipated to begin in 2019.The total area of the proposed project is 41 hectares.

Minister's Decision

On October 25, 2019 the Minister of Environment released a decision concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve a 14-hectare expansion, (Phase 1 and Phase 2) of the undertaking described in the Registration document. The total quarry footprint will equal 18 hectares. The project has been approved in accordance with Section 18(a) of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditions.
