UK CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER 2018 AND 2018 ANNUAL

In December 2018, the UK Consumer Price Index including owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 2.0 per cent per compared with December 2017.  This is down from 2.2 per cent in November 2018. The largest upward contributions came accommodation services, mobile phone charges, games, toys and hobbies, and food. Downward contributions came from falling petrol prices and air fares.

Growth in the Consumer Price Index excluding owner occupiers' housing costs (CPI) has been slightly faster at 2.1 per cent, down from 2.3 per cent, reported in November 2018.

UK inflation has been more volatile than prices in Canada.  Over the last couple of years, UK prices rose substantially faster than those in Canada, but since early 2018, growth has been similar for the two countries. Nova Scotia's CPI growth has recently dropped lower than in the UK.

ANNUAL

UK Consumer Price Index including owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose 2.3 per cent in 2018 over 2017 levels. UK CPI excluding owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPI) rose 2.5 per cent over 2017. Note: Canada and Nova Scotia Annual CPI figures will be available January 18th, 2019.

Note: The UK has recently expanded the commentary on the consumer price index to include owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH).  This includes the costs associated with owning, maintaining and living in one’s own home, known as owner occupiers’ housing costs (OOH), along with Council Tax. Both of these are significant expenses for many households and are not included in the more narrow Consumer Price Index (CPI). CPIH was re-designated as a National Statistics on 31 July 2017.  More information on the CPIH can be found here.
