LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - MAY 2015

In Nova Scotia May 2015 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.4% (+1,900) from April 2015 to 489,700 and remained virtually unchanged (-100) over May 2014.
  • Employment increased 0.8% (+3,700) from April 2015 to 446,700 and increased 0.4% (+1,600) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment decreased 4.0% (-1,800) from April 2015 to 43,000 and decreased 3.8% (-1,700) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.4 percentage points from April 2015 to 8.8%.


    In Canada May 2015 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.3% (+56,200) from April 2015 to 19.3 million and increased 0.9% (+167,700) over May 2014.
  • Employment increased 0.3% (+58,900) from April 2015 to 18.0 million and increased 1.1% (+192,300) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment decreased 0.2% (-2,600) from April 2015 to 1.3 million and decreased 1.8% (-24,400) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment rate remained unchanged from April 2014 at 6.8%.


    In Halifax May 2015 (3 month moving average, seasonally adjusted):

  • Labour force declined 0.3% (-800) from April 2015 to 237,700 and increased 1.1% (+2,600) over May 2014.
  • Employment declined 0.6% (-1,300) from April 2015 to 221,100 and decreased 0.2% (-500) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment increased 3.1% (+500) from April 2015 to 16,700 and increased 22.8% (+3,100) over May 2014.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points from April 2015 to 7.0%.

 

Statistics Canada Quotes

"Provincially, employment increased in Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia, while it declined in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

In Nova Scotia, employment rose by 3,700 in May and the unemployment rate was 8.8%. Prior to this increase, employment in the province had been trending downward since January."
