US EMPLOYMENT, JANUARY 2025

Monthly change (January 2025 vs December 2024, seasonally adjusted)

US non-farm payroll employment increased 143,000 in January 2025, rising to 159.1 million persons.

The increase of 143,000 in US nonfarm payroll employment was weaker than the growth of 307,000 reported for December 2024.                                                       

The US unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage point to 4.0% in January 2025. The US unemployment rate has remained at or above 4% since May 2024.

The US participation rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 62.6%. The US participation rate has stabilized over the last two years and remains below levels observed prior to the pandemic.

The US employment to population ratio increased 0.1 percentage points to 60.1% in January 2025. As with the participation rate, the US employment rate has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The US employment rate has declined since mid-2023.
