January 16, 2025US RETAIL SALES AND FOOD SERVICE RECEIPTS, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2024 Month over month (December 2024 vs November 2024, seasonally adjusted)
In the advance estimates of U.S retail sales and food service receipts, total sales increased 0.4% from November to December. Excluding food services receipts, retail trade increased 0.6%. Food service and drinking place receipts decreased 0.3%.
Year-over-year (December 2024 vs December 2023, seasonally adjusted)
US retail trade and food services receipts increased 3.9% from December 2023 to December 2024. Retail trade increased 4.2% and food services and drinking places sales increased 2.4%.
Annual 2024
US retail sales were up 2.3% in 2024 with gains in 8 of 12 retail categories. The declines were in furniture, sporting/recreation, building materials and gas stations while the fastest gains (in percentage terms) were in non-store retailers and miscellaneous stores. Food service receipts were up 4.3% in 2024.
