LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, DECEMBER 2024

**NOTE - Statistics Canada has revised the labour force survey results.  The charts and analysis in this article have been updated.**

                                                                          

MONTH OVER MONTH (December 2024 vs November 2024, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • The labour force increased 6,500 (+1.2%) to 563,100
  • Employment increased 6,000 (+1.2%) to 527,700
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 500 (+1.4%) to 35,400
  • The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.3%

In Canada

  • The labour force increased 55,800 (+0.2%) to 22,422,800
  • Employment increased 91,000 (+0.4%) to 20,917,400
  • The number of unemployed persons decreased 35,100 (-2.3%) to 1,505,500
  • The unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 6.7%

In the Halifax and East Hants Census Metropolitan Area,  (3-month moving average) 

  • The labour force decreased 300 (-0.1%) to 306,200
  • Employment increased 200 (+0.1%) to 290,500
  • The number of unemployed persons decreased 500 (-3.1%) to 15,600
  • The unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 5.1%

YEAR OVER YEAR (December 2024 vs December 2023)

In Nova Scotia,

  • The labour force increased 13,700 (+2.5%)
  • Employment increased 11,100 (+2.1%)
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 2,600 (+7.9%)
  • The unemployment rate increased 0.3 percentage points

In Canada

  • The labour force increased 625,400 (+2.9%)
  • Employment increased 384,600 (+1.9%)
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 240,900 (+19.0%)
  • The unemployment rate increased 0.9 percentage points

In the Halifax and East Hants Census Metropolitan Area,  (3-month moving average) 

  • The labour force increased 7,100 (+2.4%)
  • Employment increased 6,600 (+2.3%)
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 400 (+2.6%)
  • The unemployment rate was unchanged

ANNUAL AVERAGE (2024 vs 2023)

In Nova Scotia,

  • The labour force increased 17,900 (+3.3%) to an annual average of 557,500
  • Employment increased 16,000 (+3.2%) to an annual average of 521,300
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 1,900 (+5.5%) to an annual average of 36,200
  • The unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to an annual average of 6.5%

In Canada

  • The labour force increased 641,800 (+3.0%) to an annual average of 22,134,800
  • Employment increased 395,700 (+1.9%) to an annual average of 20,730,500
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 245,900 (+21.2%) to an annual average of 1,404,200
  • The unemployment rate increased 0.9 percentage points to an annual average of 6.3%

In the Halifax and East Hants Census Metropolitan Area,

  • The labour force increased 15,200 (+5.2%) to an annual average of 307,600
  • Employment increased 14,000 (+5.1%) to an annual average of 290,600
  • The number of unemployed persons increased 1,200 (+7.6%) to an annual average of 17,000
  • The unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to an annual average of 5.5%

Note: Statistics Canada has revised the Labour Force Survey coverage of the Halifax Census Metropolitan Area to incorporate the East Hants Regional Municipality.  The data have been revised to reflect this change in geography.
