January 02, 2025ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCT ACCOUNT, 2023 The Environmental and Clean Technology (ECT) Products Economic Account measures the contribution to the Canadian economy of goods and services that reduce environmental impacts. Two broad categories of goods and services are recognized: environmental goods and services (including clean electricity, biofuels and primary goods, and waste management and remediation services), and clean technology goods and services (including manufactured goods, scientific and research and development services, construction services, and support services).
In Nova Scotia the gross value added generated by the ECT products sector grew 3.6% to $1,087 million in 2023. This amounted to $1,029 per capita or 1.8% of gross domestic product (at market prices). Nationally, gross value added from ECT products grew by 0.8% in 2023 with the fastest gain in Newfoundland and Labrador. Seven provinces reported rising gross value added from ECT products, with Québec, Manitoba and British Columbia reporting declines.
Nova Scotia's gross value added per capita from ECT products was the lowest among provinces (Manitoba and Québec were the highest). Nova Scotia's gross value added from ECT products as a share of GDP was third lowest among provinces; Alberta and Saskatchewan were lowest while Manitoba and Québec were the highest.



Nova Scotia's employment in ECT industries was 7,004 in 2023 or 1.4% of total employment. Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Alberta reported the lowest employment shares in ECT while Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest employment share.

Employment in Nova Scotia's ECT industries grew by 3.7% in 2023 - behind the national growth of 4.3%. All provinces reported rising employment in ECT industries, with New Brunswick reporting the fastest growth and Prince Edward Island the slowest.

Trends
Nova Scotia's gross value added from ECT industries expanded for the third consecutive year in 2023. Nova Scotia's main contributors to ECT value added were: construction, support services, scientific research/development, waste management/remediation and renewable electricity.

Nova Scotia's employment in ECT industries has reached a new peak at 7,004 in 2023.
