FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, OCTOBER 2024

Monthly (October 2024 vs September 2024, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 0.5% to $187.9 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased by 0.6% to $8.1 billion. Across Canada, seven provinces reported higher receipts for food services and drinking places, led by Saskatchewan.  Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and British Columbia reported the only declines.

Year-over-year (October 2024 vs October 2023)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 3.7% year-over-year. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 3.6%. There were year-over-year gains in all provinces led by New Brunswick.

Year-to-date (January-October 2024 vs January-October 2023)

Nova Scotia's year-to-date food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.6%. Nationally food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.0%. All provinces reported a year-to-date increase in receipts.  New Brunswick reported the fastest percentage gain in year-to-date food service receipts while Prince Edward Island was the slowest increase.

Nova Scotia's year-to-date gains in food service receipts are attributable to the increases in limited service eating places, though there were smaller rises at full-service restaurants and specialty food service providers (such as mobile and catering).  In percentage terms, Nova Scotia drinking places reported lower year-to-date receipts compared to the same period last year.

Trends

Nova Scotia's food service receipts exhibit more volatility than national food service receipts, but in recent months Nova Scotia's receipts have grown more than the national trend.
