GOODS EXPORTERS, 2022

In 2022, there were 957 goods exporting establishments in Nova Scotia, down by 36 from 2021.  The average value of goods exports per Nova Scotia exporting establishment was $6.60 million. The value of goods exports increased 11.2% ($634 million) to $6.3 billion.

In Canada 2022, the average value of goods exports per exporting establishment was $13.46 million. The number of goods exporting establishments increased 1.3% (664 establishments) and the value of goods exports increased 24.8% ($142.4 billion) to $717.6 billion. Among the provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador recorded the highest average export value per goods exporting establishment at $49.15 million. Nova Scotia recorded the lowest average export value per goods exporting establishment at $6.60 million.

Exports per establishment are typically much higher for mines as well as energy producers and processors.  Excluding high valued exports from energy, mining and petroleum product manufacturers, Canada's goods exports per establishment were $9.81 million in 2022.  Saskatchewan reported the highest non-energy-and-mining goods exports per establishment.  British Columbia reported the lowest.

Nova Scotia's goods exports per establishment declined in 2020 and have been recovering in the most recent two years.  Canada's growth in goods exports per establishment has been even stronger in 2021 and 2022 (including the effects of rising energy prices).

Nova Scotia's highest goods exports per establishment were in plastic/rubber product manufacturing, paper manufacturing and food processing.

Canada's highest goods exports per establishment were in mining/oil/gas extraction, petroleum/coal product manufacturing, utilities and transportation equipment manufacturing.

Definition: "An enterprise is defined as the statistical unit that directs and controls the allocation of resources relating to its domestic operations, and for which consolidated financial statements are maintained. An establishment is defined as the statistical unit where the accounting data required to measure production is available. The two measures generate a different number of exporting units as well as a different industry allocation of these units." and, "The number of exporting enterprises corresponds to the number of exporting enterprises identified in the Business Register by the TEC – Goods program."
