LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, JANUARY 2023

                                                                             

MONTH OVER MONTH (January 2023 vs December 2022, seasonally adjusted)

 

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 3,500 (+0.7%) to 528,100
  • Employment increased 9,400 (+1.9%) to 501,600
  • Unemployment decreased 5,900 (-18.2%) to 26,500
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 1.2 percentage points to 5.0%


In Canada, 

  • Labour force increased 152,500 (+0.7%) to 21,078,300
  • Employment increased 150,000 (+0.8%) to 20,032,300
  • Unemployment increased 2,600 (+0.2%) to 1,046,000
  • Unemployment Rate was unchanged at 5.0%


In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 900 (+0.3%) to 273,400
  • Employment increased 2,700 (+1.0%) to 261,100
  • Unemployment decreased 1,700 (-12.1%) to 12,400
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.7 percentage points to 4.5%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (January 2023 vs January 2022)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 16,500 (+3.2%)
  • Employment increased 24,800 (+5.2%)
  • Unemployment decreased 8,300 (-23.9%)
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 1.8 percentage points

In Canada, 

  • Labour force increased 454,300 (+2.2%)
  • Employment increased 746,300 (+3.9%)
  • Unemployment decreased 292,000 (-21.8%)
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 1.5 percentage points

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 15,100 (+5.8%)
  • Employment increased 18,300 (+7.5%)
  • Unemployment decreased 3,100 (-20.0%)
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 1.5 percentage points
