RETAIL TRADE, SEPTEMBER 2022

MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted Sep 2022 vs. Aug 2022)

In Nova Scotia retail trade decreased 1.6% to $1,602 million. Nationally, retail trade decreased 0.5% to $61.1 billion. Three provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with New Brunswick and Ontario reporting the largest gains and Prince Edward Island and British Columbia reporting the largest declines.

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (seasonally adjusted Sep 2022 vs. Sep 2021)

In Nova Scotia retail trade decreased 0.4%, the only decline among the provinces. Nationally, retail trade increased 6.9%. Nine provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade..

 

 YEAR TO DATE (seasonally adjusted Jan-Sep 2022 vs. Jan-Sep 2021)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 5.8%. Nationally, retail trade increased 8.9%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario reporting the largest gain and British Columbia reporting the smallest gain.

In dollar terms, gas stations and general merchandise stores contributed most to the year-to-date increase in retail sales. In percentage terms, clothing, gas stations, and furniture stores reported the largest gains. Motor vehicles and parts and electronics/appliances stores were the only categories to report a year-to-date percentage decline over the previous period.

Trends

 

Retail sales declined sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions. National and Nova Scotia’s retail sales have followed similar trend in recent months.

 

E-Commerce 

In September2022, Canada's ecommerce sales decreased 5.4% to $3.67 billion or 6.0% of total retail sales.
