Month over month (Oct 22 vs Sep 22, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits decreased 2.4% over the previous month to average 1,526,000. Single unit structures were down 3.6%. Structures with 2 to 4 units were up 10.2%. Structures with 5 units or more were down 1.9%.
US housing starts decreased 4.2% over the previous month to average 1,425,000.
Year over year (Oct 22 vs Oct 21, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits decreased 10.1% over the same month last year. Permits for single unit structures decreased 22.1%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 3.8%. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 11.2%.
US housing starts decreased 8.8% over the same month last year. Starts for single unit structures decreased 20.8%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 17.3%.
Year to date (Jan-Oct 2022 vs Jan-Oct 2021, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits decreased 0.6% over the same period last year to average 1,711,000. Permits for single unit structures declined 8.4%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 1.5%. Permits structures with 5 units or more went up 15.0%.
Housing starts were up 0.7% over the same period last year to average 1,590,000. Starts for single unit structures declined 6.6%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 17.5%.
