US RETAIL SALES, SEPTEMBER 2022

Month over month (September 2022 vs August 2022, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales have remained relatively stable at $684 billion (-0.002%). Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 0.1% (-$0.5 billion) while food service and drinking places rose 0.5% (+$0.5 billion).

Year-over-year (September 2022 vs September 2021, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade increased 7.8% and food services and drinking places sales increased 11.4%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Sep 2022 vs Jan-Sep 2021, seasonally adjusted)

During the first nine months of 2022, the United States retail trade and food services increased 10.0%.
Retail trade increased 9.0% and food services and drinking places sales increased 18.2%.

Sales were up in 12 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in gas stations (+36.5%). The only decline was seen in electronics (-5.5%).
