INCOME OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, 2019-2020

Statistics Canada has published new information on the incomes of persons with disabilities.  In 2020, the median total income of Canadians with disabilities was $39,900 while the median income of persons without disabilities in Canada was $53,900.  (Total income includes market income as well as government transfers).  The income gap between persons with disabilities and persons without disabilities was wider in Ontario and the Prairie provinces.  The gap was narrower in Quebec and British Columbia.

Using 2019 data on distribution of income to avoid pandemic-related distortions, just over half of Atlantic Canadians with disabilities reported no market income or market income under $10,000.  In comparison, just over 17% of persons without disabilities reported zero market income or market income under $10,000.

Including government transfers (which combine with market income to generate total income), the share of Atlantic Canada's population with zero total income or total income under $10,000 falls to 17.9% for persons with disabilities and 7.5% for those without disabilities.
