RETAIL TRADE, JUNE 2022

MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted June 2022 vs. May 2022)

In Nova Scotia retail trade decreased 0.3% to $1,645.2 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 1.1% to $63.1 billion. Seven provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Saskatchewan (3.7%) reporting the largest gain and Newfoundland and Labrador  (-1.7%) reporting the largest loss. New Brunswick was unchanged month-over-month.

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (seasonally adjusted June 2022 vs. June 2021)

In Nova Scotia retail trade increased 4.4% over June 2021. Nationally, retail trade increased 11.0%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Ontario (16.9%) reporting the largest gain. British Columbia (3.5%) reported the smallest gain.

 

YEAR TO DATE (seasonally adjusted Jan-Jun 2022 vs. Jan-Jun 2021)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 6.7%. Nationally, retail trade increased 10.1%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with Ontario (17.2%) reporting the largest gain and British Columbia (1.5%) reporting the smallest gain.

Retail trade increased 6.6% or $574.3 million. In dollar terms, gas stations, clothing, food and beverage, and general merchandise stores contributed most to the increase. In percentage terms, clothing, gas stations, and furniture stores reported the largests gains. Motor vehicles and parts stores were the only category to report a year-to-date percentage decline over the previous period.

 

Trends

 

Retail sales declined sharply during periods of pandemic-related restrictions.  In May 2021, there was a sharper reduction in retail sales in Nova Scotia than at the national level.  

 

E-Commerce 

In June 2022, Canada's ecommerce sales increased 4.5% to $3.67 billion or 5.8% of total retail sales.
