FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, MAY 2022

Month-over-Month (May 2022 vs. Apr 2022, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.7% to $167.8 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 3.0% to $7.36 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in receipts for food services and drinking places, with Ontario reporting the largest gain, and New Brunswick reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

Year-over-Year (May 2022 vs. May 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 65.6% from May 2021, when COVID restrictions were in place. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 62.2%.  All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Ontario reporting the largest gain and Newfoundland and Labrador reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

Year-to-Date (Jan-May 2022 vs Jan-May 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 21.8%.  Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 42.7%. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Quebec reporting the largest gain and Prince Edward Island reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

Nova Scotia Sales by Establishment Type (Jan-May 2022 vs. Jan-May 2021, unadjusted)

Compared with Jan-May 2021, the gains in food service and drinking place receipts have been most pronounced for Nova Scotia's full-service restaurants. In percentage terms, the increases were also notable for special food services (such as mobile and catering) and drinking places.

 

Trends 

Food services and drinking places have reported repeated downturns during imposition of COVID restrictions.  As these restrictions are eased, food service receipts rebound.
