UK CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, JUNE 2022

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that for June 2022, the UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 9.4% from June 2021.  This was up from 9.1% year-over-year inflation in May.

The UK Consumer Price Index including owner-occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 8.2% compared to June 2021. This was up from the 7.9% year-over-year increase recorded in May.

The increase in the 12-month inflation rate was driven mainly by higher housing and household services (particularly electricity, gas and other fuels and owner occupiers' housing costs), and transport costs (particularly motor fuels).

Like most advanced economies, the UK experienced slower inflation in 2020.  In 2021, inflation increased as prices rebounded after the initial waves of COVID-19.  UK inflation has accelerated in 2022, particularly when oil prices spiked in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
