The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 1.0% to $680.6 billion. Both retail trade (excluding food services and drinking places) and food services and drinking place receipts were up 1.0% compared to May.
Year-over-year (June 2022 vs June 2021, seasonally adjusted)
The United States retail trade and food services increased 8.4% ($52.8 billion). Retail trade increased 7.7%, and food services and drinking places sales increased 13.4%.
Year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2022 vs Jan-Jun 2021, seasonally adjusted)
During the first half of 2022, the United States retail trade and food services increased 10.3% ($375.3 billion) to $4,013.0 billion from the same period in 2021. Retail trade increased 8.8% and food services and drinking places sales increased 22.3%.
Sales were up in 12 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in gas stations (40.9%). The only decline was seen in electronics (-3.3%).
