WHOLESALE TRADE, MAY 2022

MONTH-OVER-MONTH (seasonally adjusted, May 2022 vs. Apr 2022)

Nova Scotia wholesale trade increased 4.0% to $1,173.5 million. Canada wholesale trade increased 1.6% to $81.1 billion. Seven provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan reporting the largest gains, and New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island reporting the only declines.                                                     

YEAR-OVER-YEAR (seasonally adjusted, May 2022 vs. May 2021)

Nova Scotia wholesale trade decreased 0.7%, and Canada wholesale trade increased 11.7%.

 

YEAR-TO-DATE (seasonally adjusted, Jan-May 2022 vs. Jan-May 2021)

Nova Scotia wholesale trade increased 3.5% to $5.8 billion, and Canada wholesale trade increased 13.7% to $400.6 billion. All provinces reported year to date increases in wholesale trade, with Saskatchewan reporting the largest gain and Newfoundland and Labrador reporting the smallest gain.

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS (seasonally adjusted, Jan-May 2022 vs. Jan-May 2021)

Nova Scotia total wholesale trade increased 3.5% ($197 million). The largest dollar contributions came from food and beverage wholesalers, and building materials wholesalers.

 

TRENDS 

Nova Scotia's wholesale trade rebounded sharply from the pandemic decline, rising much more quickly than the national average in early 2021.  Over the past year, Nova Scotia's wholesale trade has returned to the national trend.  

 

 

INVENTORIES (Canada May 2022 vs. Apr 2022)

National inventories increased 2.5% from April to May 2022.  The national ratio of inventories to sales increased from 1.41 in April to 1.42 in May 2022.
