US EMPLOYMENT, JUNE 2022

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports today that US non-farm payroll employment increased 372,000 from May to June 2022. The US unemployment rate was the same for the last four months at 3.6%. Job gains were made in professional and business services, in leisure and hospitality, in health care, in transportation and warehousing, in manufacturing, in information, in social assistance, and in wholesale trade. Employment was little changed in construction, retail trade, financial activities, other services, and government. Non-farm employment is 524,000 below its pre-pandemic levels.

The US participation rate edged down 0.1 percentage point to 62.2%, 1.2 percentage points below February 2020. The decline in participation rate in the US could partially reflect people exiting labour market activity completely during the crisis with people that have lost jobs not looking for work.

The US employment to population ratio declined 0.2 percentage points to 59.9%, 1.3 percentage points below pre-pandemic levels.

Note: Canadian and US labour force statistics refer to different working-age cohorts.
