US RETAIL SALES, MAY 2022

Month over month (May 2022 vs April 2022, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales decreased 0.3% to $672.9 billion.  Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 0.4% while food service and drinking place receipts increased 0.7%.

 

Year-over-year (May 2022 vs May 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The United States Retail Trade and Food Services increased 8.1% ($50.4 billion). Retail trade increased 6.9%, and food services and drinking places sales increased 17.5%.

Year-to-date (Jan-May 2022 vs Jan-May 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The United States Retail Trade and Food Services increased 10.7% ($321.9 billion) to $3,331.4 billion. Retail trade increased 9.0%  and food services and drinking places sales increased 24.3%.

Sales were up in 12 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in gas stations (38.5%). The largest declines were seen in electronics (-1.9%).
