Month over month (Apr-22 vs Mar-22, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits decreased 3.2% over the previous month to 1,819,000. Single unit structures were down 4.6%, structures with 2 to 4 units were down 5.4% and structures with 5 units were down 0.6%.
US housing starts decreased 0.2% over the previous month to 1,724,000.
Year over year (Apr-22 vs Apr-21, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits increased 3.1% over the same month last year. Permits for single unit structures decreased 3.6%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 8.2% and structures with 5 units or more increased 16.3%.
US housing starts increased 14.6% over the same month last year. Starts for single unit structures increased 3.7%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 42.3%.
Year to date (Jan-Apr 2022 vs Jan-Apr 2021, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)
US residential building permits increased 3.8% over the same period last year to average 1,849,000. Permits for single unit structures declined -0.7%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 1.9%. Permits for structures with 5 units or more were up 13.6%.
Housing starts are up 10.4% over the same period last year to average 1,724,000. Starts for single unit structures increased 4.1%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 26.6%.
