MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, MARCH 2022

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, March 2022 vs. February 2022)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 5.3% to $900.8 million. National shipments increased 2.5% to $70.2 billion.

Manufacturing shipments were up in all 10 provinces, led by Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Quebec reported the smallest gain.

 

Year over year (seasonally adjusted, March 2022 vs. March 2021)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 6.4%. National shipments increased 18.7%.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 8 of 10 provinces, led by Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia reported the largest declines.

 

Year to date (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Mar 2022 vs. Jan-Mar 2021)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 1.4%. National shipments increased 18.1%.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 9 of 10 provinces, led by Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. 327856 was the only province to report a decline.

 

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments decreased 6.7%, while non-durable goods shipments increased 6.6%. In  Halifax, durable goods shipments decreased 19.5%, while non-durables increased 4.9%. Outside Halifax,  durable goods shipments increased 11.3%, while non-durables increased 7.0%.

Trends 

In the nine months leading up to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shipments had been trending down both in Canada and in Nova Scotia. 

After the pandemic was declared, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments declined sharply from February 2020 to May 2020. National shipments reached their trough earlier in April 2020.

Since then, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments have recovered and were 19.0% higher in March 2022 than in February 2020. National shipments have also been trending upwards since August 2020 and were 24.2% higher in March 2022 when compared to February 2020 levels.
