NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL GOODS EXPORTS, MARCH 2022

Nova Scotia international merchandise exports were $556.6 million in March 2022, an increase of 16.3% compared to March 2021. Canada merchandise exports increased 28.3% compared to March 2021.                              

 

International merchandise exports were higher in all provinces in March 2022. The largest increases were in Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick. The smallest year-over-year increase was in Manitoba (+7.1%).

Nova Scotia's exports totalled $1,494.3 million over the first three months of the year. Year-to-date exports are up 12.6% in Nova Scotia and 21.5% in Canada. Nine  provinces have had growth in exports in 2022 with the fastest growth in Alberta and the only decline in Manitoba.

 

 

Excluding energy exports, year-to-date exports are up 12.4% in Nova Scotia and 7.8% in Canada. The fastest growth in non-energy exports has been from New Brunswick (+32.1%), Prince Edward Island (+21.4%) and Saskatchewan (+14.6%). Non-energy exports have declined in Newfoundland and Labrador (-15.8%) and Manitoba (-1.1%).

 

 

Nova Scotia Year-to-Date by Sector (January-March 2022 vs January-March 2021, customs-basis, unadjusted)

The largest dollar increase in year-to-date exports has been farm, fishing and intermediate food products (+$64.1 million, +20.0%). Forestry, building and packing material and consumer goods have increased while motor vehicles and parts has been lower.

 

 

Nova Scotia Year-to-Date by Country (January-March 2022 vs January-March 2021, customs-basis, unadjusted)

For January-March 2022 compared to January-March 2021, merchandise exports increased to both United States (+$124.3 million; +14.3%) and China (+$21.2 million; +13.8%).

Exports to the largest Euro Area countries (Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain) and United Kingdom were up compared to last year.  Exports to large economies in Asia (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) have seen smaller growth of 1.5%. Exports to Mexico, and other countries were down compared to January-March 2021.
