US RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2022

Month over month (March 2022 vs February 2022, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 0.5% to $665.7 billion. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade increased 0.4% while food service and drinking place receipts increased 1.0%.

Year-over-year (March 2022 vs March 2021, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade and food services receipts increased 6.9%. Retail trade increased 5.5% and food services and drinking places receipts increased 19.4%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2022 vs Jan-Mar 2021, seasonally adjusted)

United States retail trade and food services receipts increased 12.9%. Retail trade increased 11.3% and food services and drinking places sales increased 26.6%.

Sector Analysis

Sales were up in 12 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in gas stations (+36.7%). Sales declined in electronics (-3.8%).
