US EMPLOYMENT, MARCH 2022

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that US non-farm payroll employment increased 431,000 from February to March 2022.  US employment remains 1.6 million lower than it was in the month before the COVID-19 pandemic. US employment has recovered 92.8% of the employment lost between February and April of 2020.

In March 2022, US employment increased in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail, manufacturing, social assistance, construction, financial activities, and health care. Employment was little changed in transportation and warehousing, mining, wholesale trade, information, other services, and government.

The US unemployment rate declined 0.2 percentage points to 3.6% in March 2022. US unemployment was 6.0 million in March 2022. The US unemployment rate remains 0.1 percentage points higher and the number of unemployed persons was by 0.3 million higher than in February 2020. 

The US participation rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 62.4% of the working age population in March 2022, this is 1.0 percentage points below its February 2020 level.

The US employment to population ratio increased 0.2 percentage points to 60.1% in March 2022. This is 1.1 percentage points lower than its February 2020 level.

Note: Canadian and US labour force statistics refer to different working-age cohorts.
