US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, OCTOBER 2021

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 6.2% year-over-year in October. This was above the 5.4% increase reported in September, and the largest 12-month increase since the period ending November 1990.

The seasonally adjusted monthly increase was 0.9% with the largest increases from energy, shelter, food, and new and used motor vehicles. The energy index was up 4.8% from the previous month, mainly driven by a 6.1% increase in gasoline prices. The food index increased 0.9% month-over-month while the shelter index rose 0.5%. 

The index for all items less food and energy was up 4.6% from October 2020. This was the largest 12-month increase since the period ending August 1991. Over the past 12 months, the energy index was up 30.0% and the food index increased 5.3%.
