US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, SEPTEMBER 2021

Month over month (September 2021 vs August 2021, seasonally adjusted annual rate)

US construction spending decreased 0.5% from the revised August estimate of $1,582.0 billion to $1,573.6 billion in September. Total residential construction fell 0.4% to $782.5 billion while total non-residential construction spending was down 0.6% to $791.2 billion.

Private sector construction declined 0.5% to $1,229.9 billion while public sector construction was down 0.7% to $343.7 billion.

Year over year (September 2021 vs September 2020)

US Construction spending was up 7.8%. Total residential construction was up 19.0% while total non-residential construction was down 1.3%. Private sector construction spending was up 19.3%. Public sector construction spending was down 2.4%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Sep 2021 vs Jan-Sep 2020)

In the first nine months of 2021, US construction spending was up 6.8% from the same period last year. Total residential construction was up 24.2%. Total non-residential construction was down 6.0%. Private sector construction was up 10.9%. Public sector construction was down 5.6%.
