Trends

Nova Scotia's food services and drinking places sales receipts declined sharply in March 2020 and April 2020. Steady and rapid gains were reported from May through October of 2020. Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in November and December 2020, but began to recover again from January through March of 2021 before declining in April and May as new restrictions were imposed on another wave of COVID-19 infections. These restrictions were eased in June and July 2021, contributing to the renewed growth.

In August 2021, Manitoba (+12.4%), Newfoundland and Labrador (+12.1%) and Saskatchewan (10.1%) reported receipts above the pre-pandemic period (February 2020).

Compared to February 2020, Nova Scotia's July 2021 food services and drinking places sales were 4.4% above their pre-pandemic levels.  National food services and drinking places sales were 0.8% above their pre-pandemic levels.  Among the other provinces Ontario (-2.4%) reported the greatest level below the pre-pandemic benchmark.
