EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JUNE 2021

 

Month-over-month (Jun 2021 vs May 2021)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 1.6%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 1.9%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020)

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 8.0%. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 7.9%. 

By member state,

In the European Union Jan-Jun 2021 vs Jan-Jun 2020, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Romania (15.9%)
  • Luxembourg (15.2%)
  • Lithuania (14.6%)
  • France (13.3%)
  • Croatia (12.5%)

The weakest growth occurred in:

  • Slovakia (0.9%)
  • Malta (3.4%)
  • Germany (3.5%)
  • Latvia (3.8%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area Jan-June 2021 vs Jan-June 2020, by retail sector, retail sales increased in automotive fuel, computers, telecommunications (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020), clothing and footwear (Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020), and food, beverage and tobacco. The same categories were up in the European Union in Jan-June 2021.

Comparing Jan-June 2021 to Jan-June 2020, mail and internet sales were up 27.0% in the Euro Area, and up 27.4% in the European Union.
