NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, MAY 2021

With May reference month, year-over-year (May 2021 vs May 2020) and year-to-date (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Year-to-date (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020, unadjusted)

In the first 5 months of 2021, Nova Scotia new motor vehicle unit sales increased 50.3%. The 18,507 new motor vehicles sold in Jan-May 2021 represent a sales value of $756.8 million, up 52.1% over Jan-May 2020.

In Canada new motor vehicles unit sales increased 40.1%. The 703,903 new motor vehicles sold in Jan-May 2021 represent a sales value of $32.9 billion, up 44.3% over Jan-May 2020.

Unit sales were up in all provinces with the largest increases in Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, and with smallest increases in Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Sales values were up in all provinces with the largest increases in Prince Edward Island and Quebec, and with the smallest increases in Ontario and Alberta.

Year-over-year (May 2021 vs May 2020, unadjusted)

In Nova Scotia May 2021, unit sales increased 17.3% and national unit sales increased 30.8% with the largest increases in British Columbia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island.

Nova Scotia sales values increased 18.1%, and national sales values increased 32.6%. Sales values were increased in Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

 

Unit sales and sales values rebounded sharply between April 2020 and April 2021 - rising in all provinces.  The largest gains were in Quebec while the four western provinces reported the least gains.  

Average Prices (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020)

In Nova Scotia the new motor vehicles average price, on a year to date basis, increased 1.3%. National new motor vehicle average price, on a year to date basis, increased 3.0%.

Stronger gains were reported in Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, while the growth declined in New Brunswick and weaker growth was observed in British Columbia.  

Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($51,432). Nova Scotia reported the lowest average unit price ($40,890).

 

In Nova Scotia average unit prices for all motor vehicles was $40,890, Trucks/SUV averaged $43,523, and Passenger cars averaged $30,422.

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020)

In the first 5 months of 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of truck/SUV (79.9% of unit sales) increased 55.6%. Unit sales of passenger car increased 32.1%. Sales value of truck/SUV (85.0% of sales value) increased 54.7%. Sales value of passenger car increased 39.1%.

Country of Manufacture (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020)

In the first 5 months of 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (72.0% of unit sales) increased 43.7%. Unit sales of overseas manufactures increased 70.2%.

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (75.3% of sales value) increased 46.0% . Sales value of overseas manufactures increased 74.7%
