US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, JUNE 2021

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 5.4% year-over-year in June following on 5.0% in May and 4.2% in April. This was the largest 12-month increase in the CPI since August 2008. 

The seasonally adjusted monthly increase was 0.9% with a 10.5% increase in the index of used cars and trucks accounting for more than one-third of this increase. Rising prices in similar indexes as last month occurred with increases in used cars and trucks, new vehicles, airline fares and apparel. The rise in used vehicles was the largest since the beginning of the series in 1953 and the new vehicle rise was the largest since May 1981. Food (+0.8%) and energy (+0.7%) had accelerating increases in monthly inflation in June. Medical care services and household furnishings and operations were among the few components with decreases.

The index for all items less food and energy was up 4.5% from June 2020, continuing an upward trends starting in January 2021 when index was rising 1.4% year-over-year. The year over year rise in the index less food and energy was the largest since November 1991. Over the past 12 months, the energy index was up 24.5% and the food index increased 2.4%
