Month-over-month (May 2021 vs Apr 2021)
In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 4.5%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 4.8%.
Year-to-date (Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020)
In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 8.1%. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 8.1%.
By member state,
In the European Union Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:
- Romania (+15.9%)
- France (+15.8%)
- Lithuania (+13.4%)
- Croatia (+12.3%)
- Luxembourg (+12.1%)
The weakest growth occurred in:
- Slovakia (-1.0%)
- Czechia (+1.1%, Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020)
- Latvia (+2.0%)
- Germany (+2.7%)
- Portugal (+3.0%)
By retail sector,
In the Euro Area Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020, by retail sector, retail sales increased in Automotive fuel (+12.9%), Computers, telecommunications (+15.4%, Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020), Clothing, footwear (+3.4%, Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020), and Food, beverage, tobacco (+3.0%).
In the European Union Jan-May 2021 vs Jan-May 2020, by retail sector, retail sales increased in Automotive fuel (+12.5%), Computers, telecommunications (+14.3%, Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020), Clothing, footwear (+3.7%, Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020) and Food, beverage, tobacco (+2.9%).
Comparing Jan-May 2021 to Jan-May 2020, mail and internet sales were up 29.4% in the Euro Area, and up 29.0% in the European Union.
