NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE MARCH 2021

TREND NOVA SCOTIA AND CANADA (Year over year, customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia international merchandise exports were $476.9 million in March 2021, an increase of 9.8% compared to March 2020. Nova Scotia export shipments were above pre-pandemic levels from March 2019. Canada merchandise exports increased 12.3% in March 2021 compared to March 2020.

International merchandise exports were higher in eight provinces in March 2021 with the largest increase in New Brunswick (+61.3%). Exports from Prince Edward Island (-13.2%) and Manitoba (-2.6%) were lower than last March 2020.

 

 

Year-to-Date  (Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, customs-basis, unadjusted)

Over the first three months of 2021, Nova Scotia exports have totalled $1,323.8 million, an increase of 4.3% compared to the first three months of 2020. Year-to-date exports from Nova Scotia remain 4.3% below the 2019 level which had reached $1,383.2 million in the first three months.

On a year-to-date comparison, British Columbia (+22.1%) has had the largest increase and Prince Edward Island (-11.8%) has had the largest decrease.

The largest dollar increase in year-to-date exports has been in farm, fishing and intermediate food products (+$65.4 million, +25.7%) and forestry, building and packaging material (+$35.6 million, 28.4%).

The largest dollar decrease in year-to-date exports has been in consumer goods (-$34.9 million, -12.0%) and chemical, plastic and rubber products (-$11.5 million, -15.8%).

 

 

Nova Scotia Year-to-Date by Country (Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, customs-basis, unadjusted)

For Jan-Mar 2021 compared to Jan-Mar 2020, Nova Scotia exports to the United States have increased 1.6% or $13.7 million. Exports to China are down 9.2% or $15.6 million.

Exports to large economies in Asia (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) are up 57.5%(+$25.8 million) and have risen to the largest Euro Area countries (Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain) by 6.4% (+$4.7 million).  Exports to the United Kingdom have declined 26.3% but are up 44.5% to Mexico. All other countries have seen an increase of 26.4% (+$26.3 million) in exports for the first three months of the year.
