UK RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2021

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales continued to recover in March 2021 reflecting the impact of eased COVID-19 restrictions. Retail sales volumes were 1.6% above February 2020 levels. Retail sales values were 0.9% higher than in February 2020.                                                                                                           

  • Month-over-month (Mar 2021 vs Feb 2021) retail sales value increased 5.5% while the retail sales volume (adjusted for price changes) increased 5.4%.
  • Year-over-year (Mar 2021 vs Mar 2020) retail sales value increased 7.3% and retail sales volume increased 7.2%.
  • Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020) retail sales value was down 1.6% while volumes declined 1.9%. 

Internet sales

  • Online retail sales increased by 0.6% in March 2021 when compared with February 2021.
  • In March 2021, online sales share of all retail sales decreased to 34.7% from 36.2% in February 2021. Online sales share of all retail sales increased from 20.0% in February 2020 to 34.7% in March 2021.
