NEW HOUSING PRICE INDEX, FEBRUARY 2021

Month-over-month (Jan 2021 vs Feb 2021)

According to the new data released by Statistics Canada today, the national price of new housing, increased 1.9%. For Canada, “New home prices in February rose at their fastest pace in more than three decades (since February 1989).” (Statistics Canada). New home prices exhibited a strong change in (12 out of 27) census metropolitan areas (CMAs) surveyed. The leading province was British Columbia at 3.6% and Newfoundland and Labrador reported no change in prices. In Nova Scotia the price of new housing increased 2.4%.

Year-over-year (Feb 2021 vs Feb 2020)

In Nova Scotia, new housing prices increased 8.8%. National new housing prices increased 7.0%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)

Nova Scotia's new housing prices were up 7.9%. National housing prices were up 6.2%. Quebec saw the fastest growth (+8.4 per cent) and Saskatchewan (+0.7%)  reported the smallest increase.

Census Metropolitan Areas

Year-over-year (Feb 2021 vs Feb 2020)

New house price growth among Census Metropolitan Areas was fastest in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo (+16.0%) and Ottawa (+15.0%). Negative growth was reported in Regina (-0.6%). Nova Scotia's CMA, Halifax, reported an 8.8% increase.

Year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)

New house price growth among Census Metropolitan Areas was fastest in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo (+10.7%) and slowest was in Regina (+0.1%) and no change in Sherbrooke. Nova Scotia's CMA, Halifax, reported a 5.0% increase.
