NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, JANUARY 2021

Year-over-year (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020, unadjusted)

In January 2021, Nova Scotia new motor vehicle unit sales increased 3.8%. The 2,786 new motor vehicles sold in Jan 2021 represent a sales value of $112.9 million, up 4.7% over January 2020.

In Canada new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 14.5%. The 96,475 new motor vehicles sold in January 2021 represent a sales value of $4.48 billion, down 11.1% over January 2020.

Unit sales were down the most in Quebec (-33.0%) and Ontario (-16.8%), while Newfoundland and Labrador (+22.7%) and Prince Edward Island (+8.4%) had the largest percentage increases.

Sales values were down the most in Quebec (-26.5%) and Ontario (-14.0%), while Newfoundland and Labrador (+19.8%) and Prince Edward Island (+14.6%) had the largest percentage increases in sales value.

Nova Scotia reported the second consecutive year-over-year increase in unit sales, following a 10.6% decline in November 2020. Since September 2020, Nova Scotia has reported year-over-year unit sales growth in 4 of the last 5 months. In January, Canada reported the largest year-over-year decrease in until sales since the 15.2% decline in June 2020.

 

 

Average Prices (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

Nova Scotia's average unit prices for new motor vehicles increased 0.9% compared to January 2020, while the national average unit price rose 4.0%.  Stronger gains were reported in Quebec, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island. Weaker growth was observed in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($50,043) while Prince Edward Island reported the lowest average unit price ($39,259).

In Nova Scotia, the average unit price for all motor vehicles was $40,537. Trucks/SUV averaged $42,690 and passenger cars averaged $30,169.

 

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

In January 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of truck/SUV (82.8% of unit sales) increased 10.9%. Unit sales of passenger cars decreased 20.7%. Sales value of truck/SUV (87.2% of sales value) increased 9.2%. Sales value of passenger cars decreased 17.9%.

 

Country of Manufacture (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

In January 2021, Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (69.1% of unit sales) decreased 4.8%. Unit sales of overseas manufactures increased 30.1%

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (74.8% of sales value) increased 1.2%. Sales value of overseas manufactures increased 17.0%.
